Named after the iconic civil rights figure and her husband, the Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute for Self Development enables underserved youths to reach their potential. This entity, founded in 1987 by Rosa Parks and Elaine Eason Steele, subscribes to Rosa Parks' belief in the important role of young people in improving the world.
The Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute for Self Development achieves its goals with programs and learning centers in Michigan and California. Pathways for Freedom, a key initiative, takes students through the time line of the Underground Railroad and the civil rights movement. Pathways chapters in the United States, Canada, and the Bahamas embark on a hands-on, five-week bus tour of the United States and beyond its borders to discover history. Participants report on their adventure for the trip finale. To learn the institute’s other projects, log onto www.rosaparks.org.
