Below is a brief overview of the adoption process.
Selecting an adoption professional - The first, and perhaps most important, step after making the decision to adopt is selecting an adoption professional or agency to provide guidance throughout the adoption process. Potential adoptive parents have the option of selecting a public or private agency.
Completing the home study process - A potential adoptive couple or family is required to undergo an in-home study that determines if they are able to provide a stable and loving home for a child. A few of the basic elements included in the home study include a background check, evaluation of health and financial status, and character references.
Waiting for placement - Once the application has been approved, the adoptive couple must undergo a waiting period before having a child placed in their home. The adoption professional or agency will have to weigh various factors, including preferences of the birth mother or certain characteristics of the adoptive family, before making a final decision.
